The only picture I have of George Washington & Sarah Burnes at their 50th Wedding Anniversary, November of 1879. This Grand Event took place at their home in Hope, Indiana.

The home of GW & Sarah Burnes built around 1836 in Hope, Indiana. Their home is still standing. I had the opportunity to visit this home and walk through it. It was amazing to me how detailed the wood work was for those days of only having simple hand tools. They raised their 13 children in this small 4 room home. It only had a kitchen and family room on the main level, and 2 bedrooms upstairs. Crazy!

GGGG-Grandparents; William Burnes & Cylvany Glidewell

After 3 years of extensive research including many visits to family history libraries and 2 trips to Indiana, I have finally verified William Burnes & Cylvany Glidewell to be my great, great, great, great Grandparents. I am one step closer to proving our relationship to David Burnes who originally owned 700 acres of land and sold it to President George Washington for the new "Capital City" where the White House now resides. I believe William Burnes' father is Thomas Burnes (brother of David Burnes). I am 90% sure this is the direct relation.

The photo is a headstone of Cylvany Glidewell Burnes. She is buried in the Haw Creek Cemetery in Haw Creek, Indiana. It is very difficult to read but it does say "Cylvany Burns wife of Wm Burns Died Aug. 29 1853" I looked everywhere for William Burnes with no luck. In fact, I visited every Cemetery in Hope and Haw Creek looking for his headstone and could not find him. Next to her were buried 2 possbile grandchildren Amazet Burns, Elliott V.R. Burns, and a son; William B. Burns.

GGGGG Grandparents; Thomas & Mary Burnes

I have much reason to prove Thomas Burnes as William's Father, through census records and other land records. I Found a census record in 1790 with Thomas Burns as head of household in Laurens, South Carolina on page 5 of 13. It stated he had 3 white, free males under 16 years in his household, 1 white, free males over 16 years, and 4 white, free females living in his household. They were living in the same town as Robert Glidewell found on page 8 of 13. Robert Glidewell is the father of Cylvany Glidewell (who married William Burnes). The time frame matches with the location of when William married Cylvany. If this is the case, Thomas is the father of William. I still need to see if I can find a marriage certificate of William & Cylvany in Laurens, South Carolina.

Norristown Cemetery in Shelby County Indiana

After taking 2 trips to Indiana and spending days in cemeteries, I have created quite an inventory of photos of headstones while I was there. I have many relatives who are buried in the Norristown Cemetery, including my GGG-Grandparents; George Washington Burnes & Sarah (Walker) Burnes, and many of their descendants. This cemetery is very special to me, so I have decided to photograph every single headstone in this cemetery. At 295 headstones cataloged on "Find A Grave", I still have so much more to add. There are some headstone in extremely poor condition. Some were even broken and buried under grass, so unburying the headstones to transcribe the names and dates was quite adventurous.
